It is not always possible to get a #1 ranking on Google for search terms where competition is very high. For competitive search terms you may need to spend a lot on your search optmisation in order to build the visibilty required to compete with the top ranking sites. Usually it is possible to see how competitive a search term is by looking at various factors such as Google PageRank, the on-site optimisation of the top ranked websites, the number of Adwords campaigns for a particular search term, and a few other indicators.
